I am so excited to tell you about the short story prequel to my debut novel 'Virgil Team'! This story is told from Sergeant Major Jerry Post's point of view and covers the events that led up to his "car accident" in chapter 1 of 'Virgil Team'. It was thanks to @Patriotwrites #bookclub that I was inspired to write his story.
I had a lot more fun writing his story than I realized I would! I hope you all enjoy it. I'd love to hear your feedback and I greatly appreciate any reviews you leave on Amazon or Goodreads.
Without further ado, drumrolls please, the cover reveal!
Now for a Sneak peek at 'Post's Story: Convenient Lies & Painful Truths':
...The only way he would find out was by asking, but first he’d need to separate them from their M4s resting along a box between them. Sneaking closer, he heard snatches of their conversation, which was not hard as they were practically yelling at each other.
“… I set this shit up, so the bigger cut goes to me.”
“Bull… she would be on to us if it… for him…”
The man sitting on the crate threw his arms up in clear frustration, “Who is… we’ve never seen this person.”
Post realized his mistake just as the two men reeled on him without warning when he was just ten yards away. He had committed the cardinal sin for operators – he had a personal stake in this mission. In his eagerness to clear, or condemn, Veronica based on their conversation, he had focused more on what they were saying than where he was stepping. The crunch of shattered glass underfoot had been the only noise the trained men had needed to hear to put them on high alert.
It was a rookie mistake, and one that could cost him his life.
As he raised his weapon to level on the man nearest to him, he hesitated. His second rookie mistake. If he killed the man, he may not get answers to his questions about Veronica. If he did not kill him, he wouldn’t live long enough to care about the concerns of the living. His fallen brothers and sisters would be welcoming him to Valhalla.
Then came his third and final rookie mistake. As his reactions became muddled by concerns that did not belong on a battlefield, he froze with indecision.
Failure ensued. A failure to move to cover, failure to fire his weapon to kill, and failure to prioritize his life over an answer to a question he valued more than it in that moment.
He registered in slow motion as the soldier drew his sidearm and leveled it on him. ‘Three strikes… will she miss me?’
“Hey Pendejo!” A shouted expletive in Spanish ricocheted through the room. The sound of a single shot followed it, shattering the strange hyper awareness of time that was the side effect of adrenaline.
Before he even registered what was happening, he had fallen two meters into the empty water treatment vat that had been behind him. Only a pile of garbage at its bottom and his helmet had saved him from more serious trauma.
Barely clinging to consciousness, he noted that each breath he took hurt like hell. He knew he'd been shot...
